Narrative structure: Pulp Fiction

Todorov's narrative structure

There is also evidence of Todorov's narrative structure in the used of an equilibrium, a disequilibrium and a new equilibrium.

Within Pulp Fiction there are many difference narrative structures with reference to Todorov's theory:

The first storyline with evidence of this narrative structure is the story of Vincent.

Tarontino  throughout Pulp Fiction, Tarontino split the entire film up into different stories, therefore narrative structure is present throughout the entire film, but particular Todorov's narrative structure is present in each different story throughout the film.

Narrative structure

"The way in which a story is told in both fictional and non-fictional media texts."

Vladimir Propp:
- He is a Russian critic and literary theorist.
- He proposed that it was possible to classify the characters and their actions into clearly defined roles and functions.
- Films such as Star Wars fit Propp's model precisely but a significant amount of recent films such as Pulp Fiction fit this model.

Tzvetan Todorov:
- Bulgarian literary theorist.
- Suggests most narratives start with a state of equilibrium in which life is 'normal' and protagonists happy.
- The state of normality is disrupted by an outside force.

Roland Barthes:
- French semiologist.
- Suggests that narrative works with five different codes which activates the reader to make sense of it.

Barthes codes:
- Action= A narrative device by which a resolution is produced through action.
- Enigma= Teases the audience by presenting a puzzle to solve.
- Symbolic= Connotation.
- Semic= Denotation.
- Cultural= The audience recognises as being part of culture.

Claude Levi-Strauss:
- Social anthologist. 
- Examines how stories unconsciously reflect the values, beliefs and myths of culture.
- These are usually expressed in the form of binary opposition.

Evidence of filming

Costumes

For the trailer we decided on using everyday clothing as this was a simple way to show that our trailer is modern. We used the everyday clothing on the normal individuals however once the character changes and becomes possessed by the diary, we introduce a creepy, white gown as this is stereotypically a type of costume that is seen in trailers like this one.

Characters

As a group we decided that it would be a better idea to feature ourselves in the trailer, this would mean that we wouldn't have to rely on other people to be able to film whenever we needed too. I played the main role in the horror trailer and starred in the trailer quite a lot. Within the trailer I played the parts of a victim and a possessed character as this is one of the main conventions in a horror trailer. Jodie and Ashley were also used within the trailer as we needed a group of friends that lived together, these two only starred in the trailer for a short amount of time.

Case Study Number One | Pulp Fiction

1) Which narrative structure is used in this film?
Pulp Fiction is made up of a range of story lines which are shown in the same story to present a story. The film is made up of three 'mini stories' which focus mainly on three different characters. The film is anachronic as the stories all happen at separate stories all happen at different times on the film timeline. As the film is anachronic it menas that it jumps betweent storied and times.

This is my second draft for my magazine cover and horror poster as I wasn't happy with the way my other pieces looked. I completely changed them after hearing peoples responses to my work and decided that I would make the pieces connect more with out trailer.

This is the first draft of my magazine cover and horror poster. 

FILMING TRAILER UPDATE

Most of our filming has been completed however, due to some clips not being right myself and my group have some changes and other parts to film so that out trailer is how we want it.

The main parts of the trailer that we filmed with the script in it, didn't really go with the trailer itself, we will have to change these and re film new scripted scenes.

HORROR POSTER INSPIRATION

For our horror trailer we had the task of creating a poster to present our trailer to an audience.

My horror poster was inspired by many famous posters, looking at the images, colour palette and the way the posters are set out, I decided to research into finding the type of poster that attracts an audience the best and took inspiration from this.

For our horror trailer we have the task to create a Magazine cover based on it.

When creating my magazine cover, I took inspiration from magazines which I liked the look of and tried to set mine out in a similar way. The cover above were the main ones I looked at when creating my own as I liked the way they had been made. Having made a magazine cover based on a horror trailer I researched into what colour palette used and decided Empire would best suit the genre of the magazine cover I was making.

Updated Script for our trailer

once we had devised the updated storyboards we decided  that the only form of speech that we would have would be the voiceovers at the beginning of the trailer and the end of the trailer, we recorded the voice overs a while ago and these state...
"November 16th, December 21st, January 24th, February 27th...New victims, You find me, I have your soul, Death is due."

This is all of the speech we want within our trailer as we don't want to give much away within it. We decided to keep it simple but effective.
